History

Brazilian Cultural Center of ChicagoThe idea for the cultural center came about when some friends decided to plan a “Brazilian Night Celebration” at a local gallery in December 2001. Two hundred people, including Brazilians and people from various communities in Chicago, attended this free event held at Dara Tribal Village an Ethnic Gallery.

The event showcased live Brazilian music, artwork, books and artifacts, as well as Brazilian cuisine. After this event, it became apparent that there was a need for an organization to promote and disseminate the culture of Brazil. The Brazilian Cultural Center in Chicago was legally incorporated in the State of Illinois in March 15, 2002 to attend this need. In June 2004, the Brazilian Cultural Center of Chicago received its nonprofit exemption status from the Internal Revenue Service, as well as its Charitable Organization standing from the Illinois State Attorney’s Office.
